Well, someone at Hornby jumped the gun and released the 2008 plans before the British toy fair. Lots of interesting re-releases including some of the Museum series and HMS Victorious; bound to have an effect on secondhand kit values.

Besides confirmation of the all-new 1/24 Mosquito (25 years late!) and 1/48 TSR-2, the Shaun the Sheep kits are confirmed to be a tractor and Land Rover. The three new Dr Who kits are also specified. Most of the other 'new releases' appear to be bought in from other manufacturers, but still this is a big improvement on the Humbrol days.

By the way, Guy, I think Jonshell and others are right. We need a new category - Airfix News. This isn't history, this is the future!

But isn't there always a bit of history mixed in with Airfix's future? Wink

According to an inside source, the pedigree of some of the 1/72 kits is as follows:

Sea Fury- PM/Pioneer2
Pucara- MPM
Tempest V- Heller
Chinook, Horsa, Wellington X, and Hawk 100- Italeri
Canberra B(I)8- likely ex-Frog/Eastern Express

Bit of a mixed bag there... And lots of history again. Very Happy

Cheers,

Jens O.

Maybe so Jens. I wonder if the F-27 is the Airfix kit or the Esci? The Airfix one may be a better shape, but it must be getting on a bit now despite the 1970s revamp.

I hope the 1/72 Canberra isn't the Frog one. Although tickled by the irony of a Frog kit returning to the Margate plant in which it was born, only to be sold under the Airfix name, the new 1/48 scale kits will surely point out all its defects.

The Fokker Friendship has the same old catalogue number of 05003, so I believe its the Airfix kit. Of interest are the reuse of old catalogue numbers.

Steven, thanks for that most useful breakdown.

It's been suggested elsewhere that the 1/24th Mosquito is actually a Trumpeter original; I hope not that would take the gloss off things somewhat.

I'm interested to see your theory that the Titanic Kylie might be 1/600 scale. She's small enough in 1/1!

Airfix told me in late November that there would be 97 'new' releases in the catalogue they were working on but very little brand new. They were going to reissue many of the figure sets.

I believe the Mossie is Airfix as in mid December Trevor finished our chat by wishing me a Merry Xmas and said I might get something big in my stocking with two engines hanging off! Since for years I have always concluded our chats by saying I was looking forward to the 1:24 Mossie (in your dreams Trevor would say), I took this to be a hopeful sign. Also Trevor has all the work done by Airfix on the Mossie in the 70's and many of the parts (tailplanes, engines, undercarriage, etc) are not 'handed' so one would only need one runner to do two of each, so cutting down on mould costs.

I understand any new kits are not being tooled by Trumpeter.

However, I have seen two lists so far, so until Airfix confirm them, it is probably best to go and lie down in a darkened room.

Happy New Year to everybody.

Trevor told me at SMW 2006 that the Nimrod had been tooled by Trumpeter. Question Mind you, as that is due in the shops anyday, maybe that should be considered as a current, rather than a new, kit.

Well, that looks to be the genuine article. Includes all the JB Models which were missing from the Hannants list that Steven refers to above, plus some interesting IWM and Science Museum giftsets. Might actually be worth getting the catalogue this year!

The fact that a Canberra PR9 is listed in 1/72 scale seems to blow Jens' theory about a reissued Frog kit out of the water. Talking of which, I see a u-boat there. Won't that be the first non-baking powder sub from Airfix? I wonder where that's come from?

The U-Boat could be the Special Navy one without the resin and etched parts, as there are a few other kits that look like they're from the MPM group.

I think these will more likely be reboxings of Italeri 'Battle sets':

No. 6101 Waterloo 1815

Not sure what you're saying there, Steven. There's no connection between the Frog/Novo Sea Fury kit and any of the others.

Anyway, on an unrelated matter... from Page 2 of the Hornby 2008 news section of Model Railway Express at

There are two large sets of Skaledale Figures which come from the Airfix kit range. One set includes about 45 civilians and the other has about 40 farm animals. These will be available only in 4mm scale and will come ready painted.

This would be an interesting development. However, no confirmation from the Hornby site at

The Skaledale section in the Hornby new releases does list Farm Animals, Zoo Animals and Civilians, but doesn't have any further details.

I think Steven was just listing other manufacturers who've done a 1/72 scale Sea Fury as being potential sources for the Airfix kit (I hope it's Special Hobby).

Thanks for the correction Mario. Richard is correct. I'm just listing all the possible sources for the kit, as we won't know what the kit will be until it is released. I think Special Hobby is the most likely source, considering Airfix already is using their Pucara.
